چکیده

Abstract The last four caldera-forming ignimbrites in the central San Juan caldera cluster, Colorado, erupted 1400 km3 ≤80 kyr and alternated between zoned crystal-poor rhyolite to crystal-rich dacite unzoned, dacite. 150 Rat Creek Tuff (26·91 Ma), unzoned 250 Cebolla Tuff, 500 Nelson Mountain (26·90 Ma) formed nested Luis complex with slightly offset calderas, Snowshoe (26·87 Creede south. have similar mineral assemblages of plagioclase, sanidine, quartz, biotite, hornblende, clinopyroxene, Fe–Ti oxides, accessory zircon, titanite, apatite. differs from other three more abundant hornblende a lack quartz sanidine. Trace element compositions interstitial glass are unique each ignimbrite, correlating inferred crystallization depths. Glass, feldspar, clinopyroxene thermobarometry calculations provide evidence for vertically extensive crustal magma reservoirs common magmatic zone at ∼435–470 MPa (∼16–17 km) showing transition into shallow pre-eruptive ∼110 340 (∼4–13 km), estimated reservoir architecture Altiplano Puna Volcanic Complex. upper portions eruptible parts (215 ± 50 MPa, ∼810–820 °C), (340 20 ∼860–880 ∼745–800 (110 40 825 10 °C) occupied levels crust cluster. modelling correlates deep signature typified by flat trend Ba versus Sr whole-rock chemistry. steep chemistry interpreted as shallower signature. Similarly, flatter slopes FeO An space plagioclase difficulty physically mixing Fe-rich mafic recharge owing higher viscosity. feasible lower eruption was probably triggered injection, but mingling textures pumice, suggesting that mechanisms were important causing such large eruptions. Geologic Map of the Central San Juan Caldera Cluster , Southwestern Colorado

U.S. Department of the Interior U.S. Geological Survey Wheeler Geologic Monument (Half Moon Pass quadrangle) provides exceptional exposures of three outflow tuff sheets erupted from the San Luis caldera complex. Lowest sheet is Rat Creek Tuff, which is nonwelded throughout but grades upward from light-tan rhyolite (~74% SiO 2 ) into pale brown dacite (~66% SiO 2 ) that contains sparse dark-brow...

A tree-ring reconstruction of western spruce budworm outbreaks in the San Juan Mountains, Colorado, U.S.A

Tree-ring records were used to reconstruct spatial and temporal patterns of western spruce budworm (Choristoneura occidentalis Freeman) outbreaks in mixed conifer forests of southern Colorado. Reconstructions in 11 host stands showed a regionally synchronous pattern of at least 14 outbreaks during the past 350 years. Intervals between outbreaks were highly variable within stands, but at the reg...

Volcanology. A large magmatic sill complex beneath the Toba caldera.

An understanding of the formation of large magmatic reservoirs is a key issue for the evaluation of possible strong volcanic eruptions in the future. We estimated the size and level of maturity of one of the largest volcanic reservoirs, based on radial seismic anisotropy. We used ambient-noise seismic tomography below the Toba caldera (in northern Sumatra) to observe the anisotropy that we inte...

Zoned and Unzoned Metal Grains in the Ch Chondrites Alh

Introduction: CH chondrites are metal rich, fine-grained meteorites that have undergone relatively little thermal metamorphism [1]. Meibom et al. [2] proposed that the radially zoned metal grains found in CH and also in some CB chondrites recorded the formation of these grains by condensation of metal in the solar neb-ula. This conclusion was based on measured profiles of the minor elements Ni,...
